Anubias Coffeefolia Overview
Anubias coffeefolia (Anubias barteri var. coffeefolia) belongs to the Araceae family and can reach up to 12 inches in height under the right conditions, making it ideal for mid-ground to background placement. Native to West Africa, this undemanding species thrives in both submerged and emersed setups, so it is suitable for aquariums, terrariums, paludariums, and vivariums. It has a slow to moderate growth rate and flowers readily underwater, adding extra visual appeal to planted tanks.
Appearance and Growth Habit
This plant is known for its ribbed, ruffled leaves that grow to around 3–4 inches long, creating a distinctive textured look in the aquascape. New leaves emerge in a coffee-colored bronze tone and gradually mature to deep green, giving a beautiful color transition on the same plant. With its longer foliage and bushy form, Anubias coffeefolia performs best as a mid-ground or background feature, especially when its rhizome is attached to driftwood, rocks, or other hardscape.
Care, Water Parameters and Lighting
Anubias coffeefolia is a hardy plant that adapts well to a wide range of freshwater conditions, making it perfect for beginners and low-tech setups. It grows best in water temperatures between 20–28°C with a pH range of about 6.0–7.5, and it tolerates soft to hard water when parameters remain stable. Low to medium lighting is ideal; high-intensity light can promote algae on its slow-growing leaves, so placing it in slightly shaded areas of the tank is recommended. Regular fertilization and optional CO₂ injection can enhance color and overall vigor, but they are not strictly required.
